Ričards Znutiņš-Znutāns exhibition "When my mind draws, my hands don’t think"
2025.05.09
From May 30 to June 28, 2025, the Kalnciems Quarter Gallery will host the first solo exhibition by artist Ričards Znutiņš-Znutāns, titled "When My Mind Draws, My Hands Don’t Think."
In this exhibition, the artist explores the hand as a tool of communication, expression, and emotion.
The show will feature large-scale acrylic paintings, smaller screen prints, and a mixed media sculpture. The works revolve around three main themes: dreams and regrets, hatred, and hope.
The screen prints were inspired by interviews with people from various countries who shared their personal dreams and regrets. Ričards pays particular attention to hand gestures, investigating how they can tell stories and convey emotions without words.
The exhibition is both visually intense and research-driven – grounded in the artist’s deep interest in body language and its emotional impact.
Until now, Ričards Znutiņš-Znutāns has primarily worked in digital media, but in this project he turns for the first time to painting, screen printing, and sculpture. In 2024, he completed his Master’s thesis at LUCA School of Arts in Belgium, focusing on the symbolic role of hands in communication. "When My Mind Draws, My Hands Don’t Think" is his most ambitious and personal project to date.
The opening event at Kalnciems Quarter will feature a live performance by the quartet Skranum, with members Gustavs Loris, Mārtiņš Eliass, Kārlis Ostrovskis, and Georgs Zujevs.
Admission is free.
The exhibition is supported by Kokmuiža Beer.
